Knowledge is strength

Updated: Feb 19

Finding the right personal trainer for you.

It's important to check qualifications
Asking the right questions

There's a common saying: "knowledge is power". In the context of personal health and fitness, this saying rings particularly true but let's change it to say "knowledge is strength".

The more informed you are about your physical condition and what it means for your fitness training, the better equipped you'll be to meet your fitness goals safely and effectively. But, are you asking the right questions to get the knowledge and support you need?

Did you know?

Not all personal trainers or fitness professionals have the qualifications or knowledge to work with individuals who have, or have had, certain health conditions. These conditions can range from common issues like asthma, obesity, diabetes, and osteoarthritis, to more specialised conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), and cardiovascular disease.

Other Conditions to Consider

Other conditions that you might not immediately associate with fitness training, but which can significantly influence your exercise regimen, include hip and knee replacements, Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, spinal cord injuries, connective tissue disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, and even certain mental health conditions.

Do you have or have had any of these conditions?

These CF Fitness members did ask the right questions.

Despite potential challenges with health conditions, it's entirely possible to lead an active and fulfilling lifestyle. Take Julia, for instance, 73-years-old and working on her functional strength and conditioning. And loving the new experiences and challenges strength training is giving her. Or Maeve, who is strength training to support her arthritis. Then there's Andy, who's building his strength, coordination, and conditioning following a stroke. All of them are CF Fitness members who are living proof that with the right guidance, you can be #StrongerYourWay.

Ask the Right Questions

So, how do you ensure you're getting the right guidance? Start by asking the right questions when finding the right personal trainer or fitness instructor for you. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Are you qualified to work with me?

  • Do you understand my health conditions?

  • Do you know what I can and can’t do?

  • Are you insured to work with me?

These are not just questions. They're tools for empowerment. They're what will help you bridge the gap between what you can do now and what you could do with the right support. They're what will make you #StrongerYourWay. Remember, knowledge isn't just strength, it's power. Harness it and take control of your fitness journey today.
