For example, what you eat every week and your grocery shopping list, what you watch on the TV, the colours you wear. And even the exercises and training you do.
The above question popped in to my head this weekend after being on a Level 2 Advance Kettlebell instructors training course where I was pushed to think differently.
Being pushed out of my comfort zone
During the course I had to forget what I thought I knew and take on board new teaching skills and details to teach kettlebells differently.
We were challenged to introduce many different exercises and movements with the kettlebells that I’d not thought about or perhaps had seen but didn’t think to include them in the sessions with my clients or even my own training.
But the day was also a reminder of the basics and some of the things I’d already learnt on a previous training course but that I’ve not really been using or teaching.
And that’s what got me thinking.
Why do we always fall back on what we know most of the time?
Is it because it’s the easiest thing to do?
Or because of time? As in we don’t have it so it’s quick to stick to what we’ve always done?
Because we don’t have to think about it - we just 'do'?
Or is it because we’re not sure, anxious or afraid of doing things differently?
I walked in to the classroom with my own anxieties about the day and what it would be like. Would I be able to do it all, would I be able to learn and teach it all, would I remember everything I was going to learn. and that good old anxiety of would the others on the course think I was good enough to be there?
Flip to the end of the course and I was driving home excited about the amazing day I’d had with an amazing group of people, with everything I’d learnt. That I’d been pushed out of my every day and let’s say it ‘my comfort zone’. And I was, and I am, super energised knowing that I’m going to be able to share this experience and new skills with you all.
So let’s look at the original question again: Do you stick to what you know all the time?
If the answer is yes - then ask yourself this second question: Why is that? And one other question - what’s stopping you from trying something new and different? I’d love to help you challenge what you normally do and try something new and different
If the answer is no to the original question - this is amazing and I would love to hear what you do and how you love to be challenged - comment below!
