Why do your muscles and joints ache more in the heat?

Many people have told me this week that their muscles and joints have felt more achy and stiff during the heatwave.

So, is the hot weather to blame?

The answer is yes… but not in the way you might think.

Heat doesn't usually damage muscles or joints. Instead, it changes how your body works.

When it's hot, you lose more fluid through sweating. Even mild dehydration can leave muscles feeling tight and joints less comfortable. Many people also sleep less well during hot weather. Poor sleep can make aches and pains feel worse the next day.

Hot weather can also change our routine. We may move less during the day or save jobs like gardening for the cooler mornings. Both can leave us feeling stiff.

This is often more noticeable as we get older. Our bodies become less sensitive to thirst, so we may not drink enough without realising it.

The good news is that a few simple habits can help:

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day.

  • Keep moving, even if it's just a short walk or a few mobility exercises.

  • Exercise in the cooler parts of the day.

  • Give yourself a little longer to warm up before activity.

Strength training also plays an important role. Strong muscles support your joints, improve balance and make everyday tasks easier. Regular movement helps reduce stiffness and keeps you feeling more confident as you age.

If you've been feeling a little more creaky during the heat, you're certainly not alone. Keep moving, stay hydrated, and be kind to your body. It will thank you for it.

If you'd like to feel stronger, move with more confidence and improve your overall health and functional fitness, my classes at the Marindin Hall, Frensham are always happy to welcome new faces.
